ABSTRACT
Buddha gave advice to Buddhists who choose to live as householders (gharavasa), to accumulate wealth as capital for a prosperous household. Buddha said that the source of criminal acts is poverty, for this reason, a householder, we are obliged to accumulate wealth to avoid poverty, so that we can avoid criminal acts that harm ourselves and others.
One way to accumulate wealth is by doing business or trading. In doing business, thera are Business Ethics which are used as guidelines for good business, so as not to harm yourself and others. Because a business carried out without any guidelines can result in the destruction of natural resources and the environment which affects the lives of many creatures. In Buddhism, business without guidance may still enable someone to accumulate wealth and appear materially prosperous, but it can also result in suffering. Apart from business ethics in general, business ethics originating from Buddhist teachings can also be used as a guide for Buddhists who do business or trade. Where in Buddhism, doing business is not limited to seeking wealth, but is also related to how to obtain it, how to use it and how to save it so that a person becomes prosperous and avoids suffering.
The author analyzes business ethics in the values of Buddhist teachings, which can be used as a guide for gharavasa in obtaining and accumulating wealth. The author also analyzes Buddhist business ethics again the principles of business ethics ini general. However, due to the breadth of Buddhist teachings, the author limits business ethics in the Anguttara Nilaya in this research. Method in this research is library research, using a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis research type.
The Anguttara Nikaya explains that business ethics according to Buddhist teachings begins with making Dana (donations/donating), at the right time, to the right people, and doing so beyond the expectations of the recipient of the funds. Funding is the main key to gaining wealth and business success. It is recommended that the business be run by men, with the woman’s job as financial manager in the family. It is very important to support parents, family, siblings or relatives, and spiritual teachers as well as supporting the development of religion and the country. Use sufficient resources and protect the environment and avoid the five trades that are not recommended, because they will cause many creatures to suffer and lose their lives. Any form of business that harms other creatures, although it may bring wealth, will also bring suffering.
