ABSTRACT
The stories of the Bodhisattva’s struggle can also be found in the Jatakamala reliefs found at Borobudur Temple including the Sutasoma which contains the value of virtue and generosity by the Bodhisattva. The story is a very good character, needs to be developed. The delivery of dharma by using local wisdom media including using shadow puppets is still lacking. Wayang kulit as a medium is also a fairly effective means when used for the spread of the dharma of Buddhism. The goal to be achieved in this research is to develop leather puppets based on Jatakamala Sutasoma reliefs at Borobudur Temple as an effective and practical medium for spreading the dharma. The research on the development of leather puppets based on Jatakamala Sutasoma reliefs at Borobudur Temple as a medium for spreading the dharma adopts the model introduced by Borg & Gall. According to Borg & Gall, the procedure of a development research basically consists of two main objectives, first to develop a product and second to test its effectiveness in achieving goals. In order to be relevant to this research, the plays performed are also based on Buddhist teachings, namely the Bodhisattva’s struggle in order to perfect parami as found in the Jatakamala Sutasoma relief in Borobudur temple. The results of this study are expected that the dhatrmaduta in spreading the dharma use the media of local wisdom, arts and culture that develop in the community, the increase in Buddhist-themed performing arts that can be enjoyed by the wider community, and the development of more types of socio-religious themed research by utilizing Borobudur Temple as a primary data source.
